Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif on Saturday (25th November) urged Imad Wasim to take his retirement back. He said that the all-rounder is the best spinner in Pakistan and him calling time on his career is the nation’s loss.

Imad Wasim on Friday (24th November) surprised many and announced his retirement from international cricket. He said that he wants to focus on the league cricket. This came as a shock for many as recently there were many talks about his comeback, especially with Pakistan not having good spinners.

Imad Wasim played the role for Pakistan in the white-ball format. The all-rounder contributed equally well with both bat and ball and played a crucial role in some of the major victories including the Champions Trophy win in 2017. He was part of the team’s World Cup squad in 2019 and played in the T20 World Cup as well in 2021

Rashid Latif said that Imad Wasim should reconsider his decision as he’s the team’s most effective player. He added that chief selector Mohammad Hafeez should strive to bring him back. Taking to his X account, he elaborated:

“Imad Wasim should reconsider his retirement decision. He is Pakistan’s best spinner and can be very helpful in batting as well. If the team’s most effective player isn’t in the World Cup, it’s not just Imad’s loss, it’s Pakistan’s loss.

“Mohammad Hafeez should strive to bring Imad back. If leagues need to be played, consider separation from the central contract, but keep yourself available for the Pakistan team.”

Each of my 121 appearances across the ODI and T201 formats was a dream come true – Imad Wasim

Imad Wasim while talking about his retirement said that his dream came true after representing Pakistan 121 times in two formats. He passed his good wishes to young players and said that he wanted to see them excel. He explained:

“Each of my 121 appearances across the ODI and T201 formats was a dream come true. It’s an exciting time for Pakistan cricket going forward with new coaches and leadership incoming. I wish all involved every success and I look forward to watching the team excel.”

“Thank you to the Pakistan fans for always supporting me with such passion. A final thank you to my family and friends who have been so important in helping me achieve at the highest level. I now look forward to focussing on the next stage of my playing career away from the international stage.”

Imad Wasim made his ODI and T20I debut in 2015. He represented Pakistan in the World Cup squad in 2019 and played in the T20 World Cup as well in 2021. He played 55 games in the 50-over format and scored 986 runs in those. The all-rounder took 44 wickets. In 66 T20Is, he bagged 65 wickets and scored 486 runs.
