Hardik Pandya

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya committed a Rohit Sharma-like goof-up at the toss against Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, April 14, in the 29th game of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bowl first in the match. They fielded an unchanged playing XI, unlike CSK who made one change by bringing in Matheesha Pathirana for Maheesh Theekshana.

At the toss of the 'El Classico', Hardik Pandya left everyone in splits as he got confused about whether his team was batting or bowling first. Just after the coin fell in his favor, Hardik Pandya said that they wanted to bowl first.

However, after a short chat with Ravi Shastri, Hardik Pandya seemed to forget what his team was doing and said 'thankfully we are batting first.' This surprised Ravi Shastri, who asked Pandya what they were exactly doing to this the Mumbai Indians captain said that they were bowling first. This little goof-up brought smiles to the faces of fans as well as Ravi Shastri.

“We would like to bowl first, dew will come into play. It (pitch) looks better than the last game, expecting a lot of runs. Need to stick to the basics. Winning is very important to get the momentum. We were able to win two games convincingly. That’s the beauty about IPL, everyone has to contribute. Your team will be able to achieve goals eventually. The dew started coming post 10 overs. It gets heavier in the evening. Same team,” Hardik said at the toss.

Mumbai Indians' Journey In Indian Premier League 2024 Before The Match Against Chennai Super Kings

Mumbai Indians (MI) under the leadership of Hardik Pandya started off the season on an extremely poor note. Under fire, Pandya faced heavy backlash from the spectators in the stadiums after replacing Rohit Sharma at the helm and his performance both with the bat and ball were below-par.

To make things worse for him as well as the Mumbai Indians (MI), they faced consecutive defeats despite having a star-studded line-up and were further put under heavy pressure.

On March 24, Mumbai Indians (MI) faced a loss by 6 runs against Hardik Pandya's previous team Gujarat Titans (GT). In the next two matches on March 27 and April 1, they were at the receiving end of a thrashing at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 31 runs and Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 6 wickets with 27 balls remaining.

The wait for the win for Mumbai Indians (MI) ended on April 7 when they tasted success in the match against the Delhi Capitals (DC). They thrashed the Rishabh Pant-led side by 29 runs and followed it up with a crushing victory over the Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Mumbai Indians (MI) comprehensively beat the Benguluru-based team on April 11 by 7 wickets with 27 balls remaining to continue their winning momentum.
