Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran could not control her emotions after her team's dismal defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 26).
KKR completely outplayed SRH to clinch the IPL title for the third time and first since 2014. It was one-way traffic throughout the game as KKR thoroughly dominated the contest. Barring the toss, nothing went right for SRH as they lost against KKR for the third time in a row.
SRH began their season with a 4-run loss against the Kolkata-based outfit before suffering a crushing 8-wicket loss against them in the first qualifier. They had the chance to avenge those losses in the final but were completely outplayed. KKR beat SRH by 8 wickets again to become only the third team after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to win the title thrice.
Batting first, SRH were bowled out for a paltry total of 113 runs inside 19 overs. Mitchell Starc gave KKR a flying start by dismissing Abhishek Sharma for two in the very first over before Vaibhav Arora dismissed Travis Head in the second over. In the fifth over, Starc struck again to remove Rahul Tripathi and SRH just could not recover from those early setbacks.
At one stage, they were reeling at 77 for 7 before a 24-run knock from Pat Cummins helped them post a respectable total. In reply, KKR lost the wicket of Sunil Narine early but a blazing fifty from Venkatesh Iyer helped them chase down the total with ease. Iyer scored an unbeaten 52 off 26 balls as KKR chased down the total in less than 11 overs by losing just two wickets.
And as KKR crushed SRH's dream of winning the IPL, their owner Kavya Maran looked absolutely distraught. She was seen crying in the stands as soon as the game ended. She also made sure to applaud the players' effort by clapping for them but looked absolutely inconsolable.
